Creation and Operation
  1. EcoSal will be produced by an organization of scholars consisting of:
    an Executive Editorial Board
    an Editorial Board
    a Board of Author-Curators

  2. The Executive Editorial Board will consist of 8 individuals who will be responsible for (i) selecting members of the Editorial Board; (ii) determining broad policy issues; (iii) interacting with curators of other websites and other organizations dedicated to different microorganisms; and (iv) interacting with the ASM Press publishing staff. The Executive Editorial Board will be advised by the Editorial Board and by such consultants as the Executive Editorial Board may deem appropriate. Members will serve 4-year renewable terms, though staggered terms will be arranged for the initial executive editors. Executive editors may simultaneously serve as editors. Editors will be identified along with their areas of responsibility.

  3. The Board of Editors will consist of approximately 60 editors, each responsible for a set of chapters/modules in an editorial section. Editors are appointed by the executive editors to renewable 4-year terms (staggered initially to provide continuity). Editors are responsible for (i) determining the content and organization of EcoSal, (ii) appointing author-curators, and (iii) assuring quality control of their respective editorial sections within EcoSal.

  4. The author-curators will comprise 500 to 1,000 individuals. Each will be selected by an editor to serve a 4-year renewable term. Each author-curator will be responsible for one or more subject chapters/modules, as defined by the editors. The author-curator may be responsible for any or all of the following: (i) writing an interpretive review of a subject chapter/module, (ii) updating an existing chapter/module by adding new information and references on a periodic basis, and (iii) curating relevant databases or websites linked to a chapter/module.

Author-curators will be identified in each chapter/module, with appropriate attributions, such as:
"Module written (-date-) by (-name, affiliation-)"
"Text revised by addition of (-section-), (-date-), by (-name, affiliation-)"
"References updated (-date-) by (-name, affiliation-)"
"Module largely rewritten (-date-) by (-name, affiliation-)"

Author-curators will be acknowledged by the Executive Editorial Board as having contributed original scholarship in an ASM Press, peer-reviewed, electronic publication.
Author-curators will receive free subscriptions to EcoSal, probably for their term of service.

  5. The Board of Executive Editors will eventually receive guidance from the approximately 60 Editors after their appointment. Initially this function will be provided by the Planning Group chosen by the editors of the second edition of the parent volume. The members of this Planning Group are listed in a later section in "About," on this website.

  6. The business plan constructed by ASM Press will provide reasonable assurance that EcoSal will be available as a resource to graduate students. Annual subscriptions will form the basis of the plan, and site licenses on a graded scale of charges to different classes of subscribers will be available.

  7. General policies of EcoSal will include appropriate recognition by ASM Press of the scholarly contributions of author-curators, editors, and executive board members, noting the peer-review character of the publication.
