How To Use EcoSal
EcoSal is a dynamic Web resource that is continually undergoing change, whether through linking to or from outside content or through the posting of new and revised chapters. Here are easy-to-follow instructions on navigating the basic features of the site.

Content is accessible in the following ways:
  • Table of Contents. Clicking the “Table of Contents” menu tab defaults to the Web Edition Table of Contents main page. Users can also specifically select “Web Edition” or “Print Edition” under the “Table of Contents” menu tab. From the Web and Print Edition Table of Contents main pages, users can view both What's New, the listing of the newest chapters posted to EcoSal, and What’s Coming, the list of chapters in development.

    • Web Edition TOC refers to the Table of Contents for all of the chapters that are new material and were not part of Escherichia coli and Salmonella: Cellular and Molecular Biology, 2nd Edition. Clicking “Web Edition” under the Table of Contents menu tab will link to the complete list of current and proposed modules within each domain. button will bring you back to the main page of Web Edition TOC.
    • Print Edition (Second Edition) TOC refers to the Table of Contents for all of the chapters that were contained within the second (print) edition of Escherichia coli and Salmonella: Cellular and Molecular Biology.

  • Search. The Search function enables users to create simple or complex queries against EcoSal’s extensive content. “Saved Searches” allows users to combine or save searches. Additional links enable users to search data on other sites. (For more about Search, see “How To Use Search.”) The Search engine will search both the Web Edition and the Print Edition, and results will be listed with Web Edition results appearing first.
    • “Saved Searches.” This feature provides users with a personal workspace where content and searches can be bookmarked and annotated. (For more about “Saved Searches,” see “How To Use Saved Searches.”)
    • Bookmarking chapters. A checkbox appears next to the chapter on the main page for that chapter. Clicking the check box will activate the bookmarking feature for that chapter.
The main presentation format for content is by chapter. Each chapter includes the following:
  • Table of Contents (TOC). The TOC is a telescoping hyperlinked list of all main heads and subheads for a particular chapter. Clicking on a hyperlinked head will cause that head (and portion of chapter text) to appear in the large, main frame. Clicking the expand icon ( ) will expand the TOC so users can view all main heads; clicking the collapse icon () will collapse the entire TOC.

  • Core Text. The core text is the main content of the chapter, appearing in the large, main frame. Within the text, a unchecked checkbox appears next to each main head and subhead for easy bookmarking checked to your "Saved Searches" page.

  • List of Tables and Figures. A numbered, hyperlinked list of tables and figures appearing in the chapter is maintained in the leftmost frame, below the TOC. Clicking a figure or table hyperlink in that list will transport you to the selected figure or table “in place” in the text within the large, main frame. (NAVIGATIONAL NOTE: Your “back” button will not transport you back to your original place in the text; click on a hyperlinked head or subhead in the TOC in the left frame to return to the desired location in the text.) Clicking the hyperlinked table or figure callout within the text itself will present the item in a pop up box, which can be closed without transporting you out of the text.

  • References (Web Edition) or Literature Cited (Print Edition). Available as a full list at the bottom of chapter and as individual references linked to their citations within the core text. Clicking a citation number in the core text will cause that reference to appear in a separate box for easy access and viewing.

  • PDFs. PDFs of the Print Edition chapters only are available to download for printing and personal use. PDFs include core text, complete list of literature cited, all figures, and all tables. In some cases, figures and tables have not been optimized for formatting in PDF or printing; for the best viewing in those cases, refer to the online version.
